    card might not work

Card payments are designed to be fast, seamless, and reliable. But occasionally, your card might not work — whether you’re paying online, in-store, or abroad.

Across the UK, EEA, and global payment networks, card failures are rarely random. They are usually the result of specific technical, security, or compliance checks built into modern payment systems.

Understanding why your card might not work — and what to do next — can help you resolve issues quickly and avoid repeated disruptions.

Here are 7 common reasons your card might not work, and how to fix them.

    1. Insufficient Available Balance (Not Just Total Balance)

Your card may stop working if your available balance is lower than expected.

    This can happen due to:

Even if your total balance looks sufficient, your available balance may be lower.

What to do: Check your available balance in your app and account for any pending or reserved funds before retrying the payment.

    2. Transaction Flagged by Fraud Detection Systems

Modern card payments are screened in real time using risk scoring models.

If a transaction deviates from your normal behaviour — such as:

    • a large purchase

    • a new merchant

    • a different country

    it may be declined automatically.

What to do: Check your app for a notification or approval request. You may need to confirm the transaction or retry after verification.

    3. Spending Limits or Velocity Controls

Cards often have built-in limits, including:

    • per-transaction limits

    • daily spending limits

    • contactless limits

Additionally, velocity checks may block multiple rapid transactions.

What to do: Review your card limits in the app. If needed, wait before retrying or split the payment into smaller amounts.

    4. Card Settings or Permissions Disabled

Some payments require specific settings to be enabled.

If these are disabled, your card may not work in certain scenarios.

What to do: Check your card settings in-app and ensure the relevant permissions are enabled for your use case.

    5. Expired, Frozen, or Replaced Card

it will not work for payments.

This is a common issue, especially if you recently received a new card or blocked your card temporarily.

What to do: Check your card status in the app and activate or unfreeze it if needed. If expired, use your replacement card.

    6. Network or Merchant-Side Issues

Not all payment failures originate from your account.

Card payments can fail due to:

    • merchant terminal issues

    • temporary network outages

    • payment processor errors

In these cases, the transaction may not even reach your issuer.

What to do: Try the payment again, use a different terminal, or switch to another payment method if the issue persists.

    7. Cross-Border or Currency Restrictions

    International payments introduce additional complexity.

Your card may not work due to:

This is more common when travelling or making payments outside your home region.

What to do: Ensure international payments are enabled and check if your provider supports the currency or region.

What To Do If Your Card Still Doesn’t Work

If your card continues to fail, follow these steps:

    • check your available balance

    • review card settings and limits

    • confirm there are no security alerts

    • retry the payment

    • contact support if the issue persists

Most issues can be resolved quickly once the cause is identified.

    Why Card Failures Happen

Modern payment systems are designed to balance:

    • speed

    • security

    • regulatory compliance

As payments become instant and global, real-time checks are essential to prevent fraud and protect users.

This means occasional declines or failures are part of how the system maintains security.

Understanding these mechanisms helps you respond faster and avoid unnecessary frustration.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my card not working even though I have money?

Your balance may be lower due to pending transactions, or the payment may have been flagged by security systems.

Can a card stop working due to security checks?

Yes. Transactions can be declined if they appear unusual or high-risk based on your behaviour.

Do card limits affect whether a payment goes through?

Yes. Exceeding daily or per-transaction limits can result in declined payments.

Why does my card not work abroad?

This may be due to disabled international payments, currency restrictions, or additional compliance checks.

What should I do if my card keeps failing?

Check your balance, settings, and notifications. If the issue continues, contact your provider for assistance.
