Before heading to Lijiang on my recent trip, we had a short stay at Grand Hyatt Kunming. It’s still quite new, as it only opened in late 2024.
Grand Hyatt Kunming is in a very convenient location in the CBD area. Just right beside the hotel there’s Plaza 66, a major high-end shopping mall. It’s also within walking distance to Nanping Street, with easy access to nearby metro stations and other parts of the city
First Impression of Grand Hyatt Kunming
The moment I stepped into Grand Hyatt Kunming, I was immediately impressed by the warm golden lighting, glamorous feel and high ceilings. The hotel’s design takes inspiration from Yunnan’s culture and natural landscapes. For example, the flooring is designed to resemble Yunnan’s terraced fields. No wonder they are one of the most Instagrammable hotels in Kunming. every corner is photo-worthy. One of the shots I took was near the staircase at their outdoor breakfast dining area.

Even the reception area is nicely designed with copper elements, showing Yunnan’s connection to the copper mining industry.

Kunming is known as the “Flower City,” so we were welcomed with a cup of flower tea. It was light, fragrant, and a nice touch that reflects the city’s identity. It’s also a really nice way to start our stay. Personally, I enjoy it when hotels serve welcome drinks. It helps us relax after a long journey to the hotel, and at the same time, it’s a small but meaningful way to understand the local culture.

Grand Hyatt Room Tour
I stayed in a King room, which is very spacious at 45 sqm. I really love the full floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Kunming city. I could even catch the sunset from my room.
Just opposite the bathroom, there’s a mini space with a safe box, hangers, bathrobes, and a spot to put your luggage, which is quite convenient.

Their mini fridge have drinks and snack which are complimentary.

I didn’t have the opportunity to check out the gym, swimming pool, and spa, but hopefully next time I will be able to explore and review them!
Dining At Grand Hyatt
Yun Xiang
We had our dinner at Grand Hyatt Yun Xiang Chinese restaurant which serves authentic Yunnan cuisine.
Even the restaurant has a great city view!

We had a total of 12 dishes and 1 dessert. Everything was really good, but my personal favourites were definitely the crab, chicken soup, roast duck, and beef hotpot.

Altitude
We went to Altitude after our night walk at Wan Hong Night Market to chill. It’s a bar serving wines, whiskies, and handcrafted cocktails. If you have the chance, do take a seat at their outdoor terrace to enjoy the city view! We didn’t sit outside because it was too windy and cold.
We tried their handcrafted cocktails, which are named after different altitude levels. So you can actually guess the location of the drink when you order it.

Grand Cafe
This is the place where we have our breakfast. I really love the spread here. It’s quite a big spread of local Yunnan food and western food.
You must try their colourful glutinous rice and beef noodles. There’s also a noodle station where you can customise your bowl. I added lots of mushrooms because they were really good!

Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here. The room is very comfortable, the breakfast selection and service are good, and most importantly, the location is very convenient. For a 5-star hotel at under S$300 per night, I think it’s really worth it.
