A Louisiana man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison after orchestrating a wide-ranging bank fraud and mail theft scheme that targeted financial institutions and their customers.

Marvell Trevenski Jackson Jr., 26, of Baton Rouge, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and theft of mail, says the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana.

In addition to his 48-month prison sentence, he was ordered to serve three years of supervised release, pay $378,394 in restitution and forfeit another $238,804.

According to prosecutors, Jackson led a scheme that targeted multiple federally insured financial institutions, including Neighbor’s Federal Credit Union, Essential Federal Credit Union, First Guarantee Bank and Trust, Navy Federal Credit Union and Regions Bank.

Authorities say Jackson and his co-conspirators stole mail to obtain checks and sensitive financial information, altered stolen checks, produced counterfeit checks and sent fraudulent text messages designed to trick victims into revealing banking credentials.

Investigators say the stolen information was used to access victims’ accounts and transfer money. Jackson also recruited so-called “money mules” to receive the proceeds before withdrawing most of the funds for him.

The investigation also found that Jackson stole personal and business checks from U.S. Postal Service collection boxes in Baton Rouge. Authorities later recovered more than $270,000 in stolen checks, along with equipment used to manufacture counterfeit checks, during a search of a residence linked to Jackson.

Prosecutors say the conspiracy obtained or attempted to steal more than $500,000 through counterfeit and altered checks created using financial information taken from stolen mail.

Members of the group also carried out “smishing” attacks, sending text messages that impersonated legitimate organizations to trick victims into disclosing usernames, passwords and banking information. Authorities say the scheme defrauded financial institutions and their customers of more than $300,000 across several Louisiana parishes.
