What you can do with futures
Spot trading moves one way: buy, hold, sell. Futures adds the other half of the market. With perpetual futures, you can:
- Go long or short. Position for moves in either direction, not only when markets rise.
- Hedge your holdings. Offset the spot assets you own when the market turns, without selling them.
- Trade with leverage. Open a larger position with up to 10x, sized the way you choose.
- Hold without expiry. Perpetual futures never settle, so you can hold a view for as long as it lasts, across 300+ pairs.
For example, say Bitcoin dips but you expect it to recover, while Ethereum looks stronger in the near term. Rather than sell your Bitcoin to chase Ethereum, you can go long Ethereum on a perpetual future for a fraction of the capital, and leave your Bitcoin position untouched.
Why trade futures on Kraken
