Worldline has been selected by the European Central Bank to participate in the Eurosystem’s digital euro pilot, the company confirmed on 15 July 2026. The Paris- and Luxembourg-headquartered payments group will take part as both an acquiring payment service provider and a technical service provider, covering infrastructure connectivity, transaction processing, banking channel integration and merchant acceptance.

    Pierre-Antoine Vacheron, CEO at Worldline

The pilot is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2027 and run for 12 months. It will assess digital euro payment journeys across consumer and merchant use cases including in-store NFC contactless, e-commerce and mobile commerce. The exercise is designed to validate the operational readiness of the wider ecosystem before any decision is taken on a full rollout.

Worldline is entering the pilot through its Luxembourg-based payment institution, which holds a pan-European licence, in coordination with the Central Bank of Luxembourg. It will also participate via PAYONE, its German and Austrian acquiring subsidiary, giving the group a multi-jurisdiction footprint across the pilot programme from the outset.

Pierre-Antoine Vacheron, Worldline group chief executive, said the company’s strength lay in “connecting the digital euro with the payment solutions already used across Europe,” adding that its combination of connectivity, processing, acceptance and orchestration capabilities would allow clients to accelerate readiness while reducing complexity.

What Worldline brings to the pilot

The company’s stated competitive advantage is its ability to run the digital euro alongside existing payment rails rather than as a parallel system requiring new infrastructure from scratch. Its platform is positioned to handle instant payments, account-to-account transfers, card schemes, wallets and domestic clearing networks in parallel with the new central bank digital currency instrument. The pitch to banks and merchants is that they can use a shared, scalable platform to avoid duplicating compliance and integration investment across markets.

Worldline reported revenue of €4 billion in 2025 and counts more than 1.2 million customers across Europe, giving it a distribution base that few pure-play digital euro technology providers can match at this stage of the pilot.

    Regulatory and market context

The digital euro project sits inside a broader ECB policy process that has moved slowly but with increasing momentum. The ECB’s Governing Council approved a preparation phase for the digital euro in October 2023, and the Eurosystem has been working through a rulebook development track in parallel with these operational pilots. A formal legislative proposal from the European Commission remains under negotiation, meaning a live digital euro is still several years away even under optimistic timelines.

Several other payment infrastructure operators and banking technology vendors are understood to be participating in the same pilot programme. Worldline’s selection does not confer exclusivity; the Eurosystem is deliberately running a multi-provider model to test interoperability. The commercial prize, however, is meaningful: firms that build deep integration and operational track records during the pilot are better positioned to win processing mandates at scale deployment, should the ECB and the Commission proceed.

For banks and merchants in Worldline’s existing client base, the pilot represents an early opportunity to test digital euro readiness without bearing the full infrastructure cost independently. The forward-looking question is whether Worldline can translate its pilot role into a durable position in the digital euro value chain before larger infrastructure players and central bank technology specialists intensify competition closer to the 2027 launch window.
